Surface Electrician

International Minerals Carlsbad LLC is seeking an experienced and safety-focused Surface Maintenance Electrician (E/I Technician) to support the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical, instrumentation, and automation systems throughout its surface plant and mine operations.

The Surface Maintenance Electrician is responsible for maintaining electrical systems supporting heavy industrial stationary and mobile material-moving equipment, buildings, facilities, and plant infrastructure. This position performs electrical and instrumentation work across low-, medium-, and high-voltage systems, AC and DC systems, motors, starters, drives, transformers, programmable controllers, lighting, power distribution, instrumentation, and related automation equipment.

The successful candidate will bring a strong industrial electrical background, sound troubleshooting capabilities, and the ability to work safely and independently in a heavy industrial environment. All work must be performed in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Minerals Carlsbad LLC standards, and applicable plant safety and environmental requirements.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and instrumentation systems throughout the plant and mine.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, and installation of electrical, electronic, instrumentation, and automation equipment.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Work with AC and DC systems, motors, starters, drives, transformers, receptacles, lighting systems, power supplies, wiring, conduit, and related electrical components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair control circuits, instrumentation, programmable controllers, and automation systems.
  • Use electrical testing equipment and industrial hand tools to diagnose problems and complete repairs safely and efficiently.
  • Perform electrical and electronic cable repairs and installations on both low- and high-voltage equipment.
  • Inspect electrical and instrumentation equipment to identify deficiencies, operating problems, or potential failures.
  • Replace, repair, troubleshoot, calibrate, and clean electrical, instrumentation, and automation components and systems.
  • Support maintenance and repair of pneumatic and hydraulic systems as required.
  • Perform general maintenance activities, including welding, cutting, and the installation or repair of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Participate actively in the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) process to support equipment reliability and maximize plant efficiency.
  • Communicate and coordinate maintenance activities with coworkers, supervisors, operations personnel, and other departments as necessary.
  • Plan and organize assigned work and exercise sound independent judgment when troubleshooting equipment and electrical systems.
  • Maintain required tools and use the appropriate equipment necessary to safely perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Participate in plant safety and environmental programs and support established production, product quality, and cost-performance objectives.
  • Respond to equipment failures, operational needs, and maintenance callouts as required.
  • Work overtime and respond to callouts based on plant and operational requirements.
  • Perform additional maintenance and electrical duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous industrial plant electrical experience is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical systems and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with low-, medium-, and high-voltage systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot motors, starters, drives, control circuits, electrical distribution systems, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to perform electrical, electronic, cable, instrumentation, and automation repairs and installations.
  • Ability to troubleshoot control circuits, identify electrical faults, and implement appropriate repairs.
  • Ability to safely use electrical testing equipment, industrial hand tools, and other equipment required to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to analyze operating conditions, monitor equipment, and learn new processes, systems, and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work and exercise independent judgment and decision making.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
  • Must demonstrate dependability, good attendance, initiative, and personal accountability.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime and respond to callouts as required.
  • Must actively participate in plant safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • State Journeyman Electrician license preferred.
  • Experience working with instrumentation and PLC control systems.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers and industrial automation systems.
  • Experience working with high-voltage distribution systems.
  • Experience with personal computers used in industrial maintenance, diagnostics, or control applications.
  • Experience performing preventive and predictive maintenance in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Welding and cutting experience.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems is a plus.
  • Previous experience within a mining, minerals, manufacturing, processing, material handling, or other heavy industrial environment is preferred.

Physical Requirements

The Surface Maintenance Electrician must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including:

  • Performing physically demanding electrical and maintenance work throughout the assigned shift.
  • Standing and walking for extended periods while working throughout plant and mine facilities.
  • Frequently bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and climbing as required to access equipment.
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, platforms, and equipment to perform inspections, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Working in and around stationary and mobile industrial equipment.
  • Safely handling electrical testing equipment, power tools, hand tools, cables, conduit, and maintenance materials.
  • Performing work requiring manual dexterity and repetitive use of the hands, wrists, and fingers.
  • Wearing all required personal protective equipment appropriate to the assigned task and work area.
  • Performing maintenance work in areas where access, positioning, or equipment configuration may require working in physically demanding positions.

Work Environment

This position works in an active mining and heavy industrial environment and may perform duties throughout plant, mine, building, facility, and equipment areas.

Working conditions may include exposure to electrical systems, energized equipment, high-voltage distribution, moving machinery, industrial equipment, noise, vibration, dust, varying temperatures, outdoor weather conditions, oils, and other conditions associated with mining and industrial maintenance operations.

The Surface Maintenance Electrician must maintain strict compliance with National Electrical Code requirements, IMC electrical and maintenance standards, plant safety and environmental procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, and applicable personal protective equipment standards while performing assigned work.
